Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mauntel crafted a series of “Chalk Talks” as a hobby to enjoy together as retirement approached. Fred did the “chalking” while Lucile, or Mrs. Fred Mauntel as she preferred, did the “talking.” Each production was artfully crafted around a theme of historic sites, nature, architecture, conservation, or roadside beautification, a topic dear to them both. As Mrs. Mauntel talked about the history and folklore of the topic (while sprinkling jokes and tales throughout), Mr. Mauntel created beautiful chalk drawings to match. He would often give the artwork away after the presentation. The pair brought their Chalk Talks to far reaching parts of Missouri as well as traveling to Indiana, Illinois, Oklahoma, and many other states to educate and entertain.
