Volume 5 in the Washington History Series

Adelbert, Count von Baudissin (1820-1871) was a German-speaking resident of Denmark who immigrated to New York with his brother Julius. Their brothers, Felix and Waldemar, had previously settled in Missouri. Adelbert initially homesteaded in Callaway County in the embryonic community of Portland. He relocated to Washington in 1854 to open a pharmacy and briefly moved to St. Louis to work as a journalist. He returned to Washington to establish the town's first newspaper, The Courier. "The Settler in Missouri," written in 1854, was his first major American publication and was intended to instruct German immigrants on American life and how to operate a farm in Missouri.
